APPOINTMENT OF TWO NEW MEMBERS OF COMMITTEE ON MUTAGENICITY OF CHEMICALS IN FOOD, CONSUMER PRODUCTS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Sir Liam Donaldson, the Government's Chief Medical Officer, has announced today that Dr Gillian Clare and Dr Elizabeth Parry will be the two new Members of the Committee on Mutagenicity of Chemicals in Food, Consumer Products and the Environment. Dr Clare and Dr Parry have been appointed for a term of three years with effect from 1 April 2002.

The appointments have been agreed by the Chairman of the Board of the Food Standards Agency. The appointments have been made in accordance with the guidance issued by the Office of the Commissioner for Public Appointments (OCPA).

Dr Elizabeth Parry is a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Wales, Swansea. For many years Dr Parry has been involved in academic research relating to the effects of chemicals on chromosomes in mammalian cells, both structural changes (clastogenicity) and numerical changes (aneuploidy). She has played a leading role in the development of methods to measure aneuploidy through European Union funded research.

Dr Gillian Clare is head of genetic toxicity at the Huntingdon Life Sciences. She has very extensive experience in genetic toxicology over many years both in industrial research laboratories and contract laboratories. This has covered a wide range of different methods to investigate the mutagenic potential of chemicals, but in particular their effects on mammalian chromosomes. She has played a leading role in the UK professional societies (UK Environmental Mutagen Society) genetox discussion group.
