Minutes

1. The minutes were agreed with no changes.
   
   Matters arising
   
   Ozone
   
   
2. A sub-group meeting had been held on 14th November 2003. Comments from this meeting had been incorporated into the report; seasonal differences had been discussed; further work had been done on the ozone levels chapter and further chapters were being drafted. It was hoped to hold a further sub-group meeting in April and bring a draft of the full report to the June meeting of COMEAP.
   
   Asthma and air pollution report
   
   
3. This would be progressed further after the cardiovascular report was finalised.
   
   Report on air pollution and heart disease
   
   
4. The Committee considered a draft of the air pollution and heart disease report. The conclusions and research recommendations were still to be written and more editing was needed on the long-term exposure section.
   
   
5. The Secretariat reported that, following discussions with the British Heart Foundation, it was hoped that a workshop to discuss the draft report would be held in the summer.
   
   
6. There was extensive discussion of, amongst other things,:
   
   
   • the scope of the report,
     
   • the level of detail in the text or in annexes,
     
   • the need for lay summaries at the beginning of each chapter,
     
   • the need for more summary tables to summarise the evidence in each chapter
     
   • the need for more background on the time course of factors that could influence the development or breakdown of atheromatous plaques.
     

7. The Secretariat would collate all the suggested changes and discuss allocation of redrafting tasks with the Chairman. A near final report would be presented to the June meeting where discussion would focus on the overall conclusions and the research recommendations.
   
   Second quantification report
   
   
8. The Committee had previously agreed to update the 1998 Quantification report. The Secretariat had discussed next steps with Fintan Hurley (who would chair a sub-group to prepare the report) and the COMEAP Chairman. A sub-group would be set up to start work next Autumn.
