Genetics and Insurance Committee

GAIC is a non-statutory advisory non-departmental public body and has a UK-wide remit, with terms of reference:

  • to develop and publish criteria for the evaluation of specific genetic tests, their application to particular conditions and their reliability and relevance to particular types of insurance;
  • to evaluate particular tests against those criteria and to bring to public knowledge its findings;
  • to report to Health, Treasury, and Department of Trade and Industry Ministers on proposals received by GAIC from insurance providers and the subsequent level of compliance by the industry with the recommendations of GAIC;
  • to provide independent wide ranging oversight of how insurers are using genetic tests, specifically;
    • To provide independent scrutiny of compliance with the ABI Code of Practice and the terms of the concordat and moratorium agreed in 2005 on the use of genetic test results by insurance companies;
    • To deal with complaints from insurance applicants about the way an insurance company has dealt with their application under the moratorium, where such complaints have not been resolved to the satisfaction of the applicant by either their insurance company in the first instance or by the ABI; and
    • To report annually to Health, Treasury, and DTI Ministers on compliance by insurers with the ABI Code of Practice, the concordat and the moratorium.

For details of applications to GAIC please see GAIC's fourth report.

Latest news

  • March 2008: Applications under consideration

    There are currently no applications under consideration by GAIC. All applications submitted to GAIC by December 2000 have been returned to the Association of British Insurers. The ABI has written to the Department of Health on 8 June 2007 to say “The ABI has said that it has no plans to submit any applications for the use of futher predictive genetic tests, and certainly will not be making any applications in 2008.”

    If any applications are received in the future then, as part of the review process, the relevant charities will be involved, and will be asked for comments.
