Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation

JOB DESCRIPTION FOR A PAEDIATRCIAN AND PUBLIC HEALTH SPECIALIST ON THE JOINT COMMITTEE ON VACCINATION AND IMMUNISATION

As members of the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) you will work with the Chair and other Members using your experience, expertise and knowledge to guide the work of the Committee and to offer appropriate advice to UK Health Ministers. The Committee plays a key role in providing advice on developing vaccination and immunisation issues within the UK and also contributing towards vaccination policy world-wide.

You will:

  • Help to assess current evidence about the safety, efficacy and appropriateness of vaccines;
  • Contribute to the advice given to UK Health Ministers on all matters relating to vaccines and immunisation;
  • Be committed to the continuing development and improvement on immunisation policy on immunisation; and
  • Bring relevant experience in paediatrics and communicable disease control.

Training

Appropriate training for new members will be given.

Time commitment

The Committee meets three times a year. In addition there are a number of Panels/Sub Committees that are convened to look at specific issues. Members may be invited to join one of more of these and additional days may be required. At least one day's preparation time is needed for each meeting. The Secretariat may also contact members for advice on specific issues as they arise.

Remuneration

Appointments to JCVI are unsalaried but members receive travel and subsistence at the prevalent Department of Health rates.

Appointment and Tenure of Office

  • Members are appointed or an initial period of up to four years.
  • Appointments may be renewable at the end of the first period of office. A degree of change is often sought on Committees and there should be no expectation of automatic reappointment.

  • To emphasise the importance of public service values in the running of the Committee, all members on appointment are required to subscribe to the Code of Best Practice for Board Members of Public Bodies.
  • You should note particularly to declare any conflict of interest that arise in the course of the Committee's business and the need to declare any relevant business interests, positions of authority or in connections with commercial, public or voluntary bodies.
  • In line with the Nolan recommendations and the OCPA Guidance on appointments to non-departmental public bodies, the Secretary of State for Health is required to report annually on the public appointments made to the statutory bodies and committees for which he is responsible. You may wish to note that if appointed to the Committee the personal appointment information that will be published will include your name, age, gender, background, significant political activity (if any), period appointed, remuneration rates, details of any other public appointments held and any declarations of interest.

Person qualities required for a Paediatrician on the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation

Essential

You must:

  • Have been a paediatrician with at least 10 years experience;

  • Have knowledge and experience of matters relating to vaccination and immunisation;

  • Be committed to good working practices;

  • Be committed to the principals of public service with the ability to perform duties with absolute integrity;

  • Be able to demonstrate your ability as an excellent communicator.

Desirable

  • Have experience of a contributory role in a large organisation, gained through a private or public situation.
