Research

The UK Department of Health commissions:

Annual monitoring of tar (nicotine free dry particulate matter), nicotine and carbon monoxide (TNCO) yields in cigarette smoke of UK brands. This data is used to check that pack declarations are correct and that the ongoing programme to reduce TNCO yields is being adhered to.
On the basis of advice from the Technical Advisory Group of SCOTH, Department of Health has also commissioned research to:

a) investigate the effect of smoking behaviour on yields of toxic substances by, for example, undertaking surveys using enhanced smoking protocols (i.e. smoking the cigarette more intensively - larger puffs and more puffs per minute).

b) determine the emission levels of a range of toxic substances in cigarette and cigar smoke.

c) review how aspects of cigarette design impact on the release of nicotine from a cigarette.

The following reports commissioned from either LGC (Teddington) or Arista Laboratories Europe are available in electronic format (see help with pdf for more information).

A survey of 184 UK brands (Jan-Dec 2002) for tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide yields in cigarette smoke

Tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide yields of fine cut tobacco (hand rolling tobacco)

Effect of enhanced smoking on the yields of :

  1. tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide (12 UK brands); (3.3Mb - contains large scanned images)
  2. extended survey of 68 UK brands for tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide (562Kb)
  3. polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, (539Kb)
  4. nitrogen monoxide, (270Kb)
  5. volatile organic compounds (308Kb)

Yields of toxic substances in smoke for:

  1. nitrogen monoxide - 1996 Survey of UK cigarette brands (298Kb)
  2. tar and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons - comparison of UK and USA cigarette brands (211Kb)
  3. tar, nicotine and carbon monoxide & polycylic aromatic hydrocarbon - cigarettes & small cigars (197Kb)
  4. NFDPM, nicotine & carbon monoxide cigarette smoke yields (50KB)
  5. volatile organic compounds - small cigars (303Kb)
