Professor Alan Jackson

Chair of Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN)

Professor Alan Jackson is Director of the Institute of Human Nutrition, University of Southampton. He trained in paediatrics at the University of Cambridge and University College Hospital, London. He was a Wellcome Research Fellow and subsequently Director of the Tropical Metabolism Research Unit, University of the West Indies. He was a member of the Committee on Medical Aspects of Food and Nutrition Policy for many years and on its creation in 2000 was appointed Chairman of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition to the Department of Health and the Food Standards Agency, UK. He is an Elected Member of Council of the Caribbean Health Research Council, Convenor of the International Union of Nutrition Sciences Task Force on Severe Malnutrition, Chairman of the WHO/UNICEF/World Food Programme/IUNS to review evidence for treatment of severe childhood malnutrition, and a member of the Advisory Panel for the second Expert Report on Diet and Cancer of the World Cancer Research Fund. He is a Registered Public Health Nutritionist and Honorary Member of the Nutrition Society, a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians, a Fellow of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health and a Fellow of the Royal College of Pathologists in London.
